Student Work
A look at the kinds of exercises, shoots and edits trainees work on during their sessions in Exeter.
The craft behind each exercise
Trainees work through framing, audio, delivery and editing in real conditions rather than slides. The scenes below show the equipment, settings and steps that make up a typical session.
-
Framing a handheld interview
Trainees practise holding a shot steady on the shoulder, composing a two-shot and keeping the interviewee well placed while the camera moves with the conversation.
-
Setting up audio on location
Radio mics, handheld mics and wind protection are tested before recording. Clean sound is treated as seriously as a good picture, because a broadcast piece depends on both.
-
Piece-to-camera rehearsal
Reporters rehearse short pieces to camera, working on pace, eye line and where to stand, then watch the playback with a tutor to hear what worked and what did not.
-
Studio delivery practice
In the studio, trainees read scripts written to picture and learn to stay calm while a lens and lights are on them, with notes on posture, voice and timing.
-
Logging and cutting a package
Footage is logged, the best clips selected and a short news package cut to a set running time, so trainees feel what a deadline does to editing decisions.
-
Live report planning
Before a mock live report, trainees note key facts, plan an opening line and agree cues with a colleague acting as the gallery, then deliver it with little time to prepare.
