Letters from former trainees

These notes describe how people found the sessions and what they took from them. They reflect individual experiences and are not a promise of any particular result.

I had been shooting for a local group for a while but never felt sure about exposure. Working through it on a real camera, with the tutor watching, finally made it click. I now check my audio before anything else.

Daniel Rowe Freelance camera operator

The piece-to-camera sessions were the most useful part for me. Watching my own playback was uncomfortable at first, but the notes were specific and kind. I write to picture more carefully now and sound less stiff.

Amira Khan Journalism graduate

I came for the editing sessions and learned how a newsroom actually runs the day. Logging footage properly and cutting to a fixed length changed how I think about shooting in the first place.

Tom Ellery Trainee video producer

The one-to-one portfolio session helped me choose which pieces to put in my showreel and which to leave out. I felt clearer about my applications afterwards, and the feedback was honest without being harsh.

Who we teach

The people our training is written for

Our classes suit people at different points in a television news career. Some are only starting out, while others already work and want to sharpen one skill. The groups below describe the audiences we have in mind when planning sessions.

  • Aspiring TV reporters

People who want to report for television and need practice in scripting to picture, delivery to camera and building a piece from scratch.

  • Camera operators

Operators who want firmer technique in framing, exposure and audio when shooting handheld or on a tripod in unpredictable places.

  • Journalism students

Students who have studied the theory and want hands-on time with cameras, studio delivery and a newsroom-style editing routine.

  • Working reporters

Reporters already on air who want to improve live coverage, ad-libbing and calm delivery when a story breaks.

  • Early-career producers

Producers and video journalists who want a grounding in logging, cutting a news package and meeting a deadline.

  • Career changers

People moving into broadcast news from other fields who need a clear route into shooting, reporting and building a portfolio.
